A disaster was narrowly avoided on April 20 at a level crossing near Rumbeke, in West Flanders. The images captured by an Infrabel camera are impressive. Despite adequate signage and closed gates in front of the crossing, we see a motorcyclist slaloming between the gates to cross the track, while a train is approaching at high speed. Eventually, the driver manages to narrowly avoid the train to get out of the way.
According to information from the Nieuwsblad, the unconscious motorcyclist was found. He is a young man of 20, from Ledegem. He will have to appear in court.
It was with the help of a citizen and CCTV footage that the young man, delivery man, was found. He was visited by the police and admitted that it was indeed him. He explained that he was driving with his headphones on and did not see that the traffic lights were red. He claims that he did not hear the crossing sound because of his earphones. His vehicle was neither registered nor insured.
