A study finds that napping helps older people preserve their memory by reducing brain shrinkage.

It is noteworthy that, starting from the age of 35, the brain shrinks by 0.2 to 0.5% annually, and by an even greater rate following the age of 60.

This can contribute to memory lapses, cognitive impairment and dementia.

But the British newspaper “Daily Mail” published a study stating that people who used to sleep naps have a larger brain volume, which means that their brain may shrink less over time.

Compared to people who are not accustomed to napping sleep, those who enjoy napping have the possibility of their brain being younger by 2.6 to 5.6%.

“Our findings suggest that for some people, naps may be part of the puzzle that can help maintain brain health as they age,” said senior study author Dr Victoria Garfield, from University College London.

And previous studies from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands had indicated that more than a quarter of those over 65 years slept in the middle of the day, in addition to 14% of those aged 16 to 64 years.

The new study did not find that those who slept in the middle of the day performed better on tests of visual memory or were mentally faster.

But they had a larger brain size, which might be because napping allows people to get a good night’s sleep.
