Nancy Pelosi meets by surprise with Volodimir Zelensky in kyiv | NEWS | D.W.

Nancy Pelosi, president of the United States House of Representatives, met this Sunday (05.01.2022) with the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, during an unannounced visit to kyiv, the capital of the beleaguered country. Pelosi, second in line to the presidency following the vice president, is the highest-ranking US leader to visit Ukraine since the start of the war. Her visit was aimed at expressing her country’s support for the Ukrainian government.

The Ukrainian Presidency posted images of the meeting early on its Twitter account in which the Ukrainian president welcomed Pelosi and her companions, a congressional delegation that included representatives Jason Crow, Jim McGovern, Adam Schiff , Gregory Meeks, C Barbara Lee, and Bill Keating.

“All of you are welcome,” Zelensky told the Americans, thanking them for their help in “protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state.” Pelosi, for her part, thanked him “for his fight for freedom.” “We are on the frontier of freedom and your fight is a fight for everyone. Our commitment is to be with you until the fight is over,” Pelosi added.

Pelosi’s visit had not been announced, although it was expected. In a statement from Pelosi’s office, which does not specify the date of the visit either, it indicates that the delegation will continue to travel through southeastern Poland and Warsaw.
