US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday she would run for the House of Representatives to seek a 19th term, but did not say whether she would seek to remain in her leadership role among Democrats.
The California Representative, Pelosi, is the first woman to lead the House of Representatives, and was expected to step down, especially as her Democratic Party prepared for a possible loss of its majority in the midterm elections on November 8.
It was not immediately clear whether she would abide by an agreement she made to secure an unprecedented second term as Speaker of the House following the 2018 elections, to stay for two additional terms and make way for a new generation to ascend to the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives.
Pelosi’s office declined to comment on whether she would seek the presidency once more.
This will not be the first time that the Speaker of the Council announces that he will run for elections once more and then decide later not to seek his presidency once more.
Although Democrats are preparing for a difficult election season likely next fall, Pelosi’s seat is considered safe for the party.
