Nancy Pelosi endorses Kamala Harris as Democratic presidential candidate

MEXICO CITY.- The former president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelositoday expressed his support for Kamala Harris as a Democratic presidential candidate, a day after the President Joe Biden announced that he will not seek re-election.

“Today, with immense pride and boundless optimism for the future of our country, I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” Pelosi said in a statement. “My enthusiastic endorsement of Kamala Harris for President is official, personal, and political,” she added.

The influential lawmaker, whose pressure was key to Biden’s withdrawal from the nomination, explained that “officially, I have seen the strength and courage of Kamala Harris as a defender of working families, especially fighting for a woman’s right to choose.
“I have personally known Kamala Harris for decades because of her strong values, her faith, and her commitment to public service. Politically, make no mistake: Kamala Harris as a woman in politics is brilliantly astute – and I have every confidence that she will lead us to victory in November.”

Pelosi’s support is key for Harris and adds to that of governors who could have been her rivals and who decided to support her instead, such as the governor of California, Gavin Newsom; the one from Pennsylvania, Josh Shapirothe one from Michigan, Gretchen Whitmerand the one from Illinois, JB Pritzker.

Pelosi had already told Biden privately that polls showed he could not win, sources told CNN.

Pelosi concluded her statement by stressing that “in the Democratic Party, our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power. Now, we must unify and charge forward to resoundingly defeat Donald Trump and enthusiastically elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States. Onward to victory!”
