On the occasion of the 25ᵉ edition of the Folknam festival in Namur, a resident broke a strange record. In the test of the biggest eater of “djote” (a specialty of Nivelles), the man in question won hands down by swallowing… 2.5kg of this dish. Even more incredible is his previous record which he himself broke given that he was the winner last year as well.
A typical city festival
The 25th edition of FolkNam, the Namur festival of folklore and traditions, will take place on Saturday April 15 and will be marked by a nocturnal sound and light show, its organizers said on Friday. As usual, a craft market and a historic village will be installed on the Place d’Armes. Free access, the public will be able to see craftsmen at work there and learn more regarding several Namur folk groups such as the Masuis and Cotelis de Jambes.
Animations and re-enactments will be offered by several troops such as the Medieval Company of the Furet or the Battalion of the Canaries of Namur. Everything will be embellished with folk shows combining music and dance. It will also be possible to learn regarding old games or to eat with djote, a typical cabbage stew, decorated with bacon bits and a sausage.
The opening ceremony, marked by a speech and a birthday cake, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. At 12:30 p.m., the third edition of the “Concoûrs do pus grand mougneû d’djote di Nameur” will also take place. In other words, the contest for the biggest djote eater.
In addition to a historic procession in the streets of the city center (from 2 p.m.), the program is completed by a concert by the Molons of the Royal Moncrabeau Society (from 2.30 p.m.) and a final roundregarding (from 3.30 p.m.) on Place Maurice Servais. In the evening, it will then be time to return to the Place d’Armes to enjoy the anniversary sound and light show, featuring folk groups from Namur.
