The Namur Traders Association (ACN) exposed on Friday its concerns regarding the expansion of pedestrian areas and the possible construction of a shopping center in the center of the Walloon capital through an independent study.

About 500 adults living within a 50 km radius around the centre of Namur, 123 passers-by and 219 Namur businessmen were surveyed.

Nearly half (48%) of those living within a 50 km radius of Namur talk regarding empty commercial areas, a lot of begging and that it is also a dirty and “unsafe” city. Passers-by have a more positive view. In their eyes, Namur is a pleasant city for walking, with good commercial and cultural diversity and attractive hospitality.

According to the survey, the current pedestrian extension may bring new curious customers. Therefore, loyalty work is needed. At the same time, the pedestrian zone may scare away some people who shop in Namur, so that they no longer come here. Shopping centers with an area of regarding 300 square meters and their brands also cannot attract new customers. The diversity of brands takes precedence over their size.

In addition, 21% of retailers surveyed have already said they are looking to move their business into shopping centres, raising concerns regarding the emergence of many new vacant units in shopping centres. Finally, 69% of existing customers said they drive to the city centre, which, according to ACN, indicates a structural problem.

In light of the findings, ACN hopes to play a constructive role. She believes solutions can be found through better communication and a review of work plans and current projects. She also invites City College to once once more question the merits of building a shopping mall.
