While negative temperatures are forecast in the coming days, the Namur-Capital police will have the capacity to deprive of liberty any person who refuses to be sheltered, announces the president of the CPAS Philippe Noël. A measure which will be in force until January 11.
In other words, according to the order signed by Mayor Maxime Prévot, it will be prohibited to sleep in the street as soon as the external temperatures felt are equal to or lower than -10°. “It is a concern related to people’s health” explains Philippe Noël, “We arrive at temperatures which are close to what we call morbid cold, for which there is a proven consequence on their survival.
If it becomes temporarily illegal to sleep outside, it will not make it any easier to find shelter during the cold nights. In fact, the various accommodation solutions have already reached saturation point in Namur, with the risk of having to turn away certain people.
“This is precisely why I am very worried” sighs Philippe Noël, “It’s regarding being able to reconcile the saturation of the night shelter, the cold weather forecasts and, in general, the situation of poverty. Since yesterday, we have activated all possible and imaginable resources to find solutions. We basically have until Sunday evening to find them.”
