Namibia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry announced on Saturday that it was taking immediate action to control the spread of the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus, which has been detected in the country May 23 this year.
In a statement, Chief Veterinarian Albertina Shilongo outlined a series of measures being implemented across the country to minimize transmission of the virus from ticks and animals to humans.
The Department enforces strict tick control measures at all animal gatherings, ensuring that inspection and, where appropriate, supervision of tick control activities are carried out in livestock establishments and auction houses identified as high risk, she said.
She urged people who work with animals to ensure they are tick-free and to wear protective clothing during slaughter procedures, while animal producers were urged to use approved acaricides, which are chemical agents used to control tick infestations on animals.
