The first trial will be held for singer Nam Tae-hyun (29) and broadcaster Seo Min-jae (30), who were indicted without detention on charges of using Philopon.
On the morning of the 19th, the first trial date for Nam Tae-hyun and Seo Min-jae on charges of violating the law on drug management will be held at Criminal Division 7 of the Seoul Western District Court.
The two are suspected of purchasing methamphetamine through SNS around August of last year and taking the drug together. Nam Tae-hyun was also accused of taking Philopon alone in December of last year.
Suspicion of their drug use arose in August last year when Seo Min-jae posted on his Instagram, “Nam Tae-hyun has Philopon” and “There is a used syringe (for drug use) in my room or in the office cabinet.”
The next day, Seo Min-jae explained, “I had a fight with my lover due to each other’s fault,” and “I was in a state of loss of reason because I took more psychiatric medication than the appropriate amount due to stress.” However, the police began an investigation following reports from netizens who saw the post. The police applied for an arrest warrant for them once in May, but it was rejected by the court.
Afterwards, last August, the 3rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office indicted the two without detention. The prosecution admitted the charges, and stated that the reasons for non-detainment were that Nam Tae-hyun voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility and appeared on broadcasts to promote the dangers of drugs, and Seo Min-jae was a first-time offender and cooperated with the investigation.
Nam Tae-hyun opened a YouTube channel at the end of August and announced his current status at a drug addiction rehabilitation center. On the 12th, he appeared as a witness for the Health and Welfare Committee audit of government affairs held at the National Assembly and urged government support, saying, “Drug addiction cannot be solved alone.”
Nam Tae-hyun debuted as a member of YG Entertainment’s group Winner in 2014 and gained popularity, but left the group two years later. He later left YG and performed with the band South Club. In a recent broadcast, he revealed his current status by entering ‘Incheon Dark’, a drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation center, and receiving treatment.
Seo Min-jae graduated from an engineering school and worked as a female mechanic at Hyundai Motor Company. She made her name known by appearing on Channel A’s dating entertainment program ‘Heart Signal 3’.
