Nam Hyun-hee’s fencing academy in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the followingnoon of October 31st/Photo = Reporter Jeong Jin-sol At around 3 p.m. on the 31st of last month, the ‘Nam Hyun-hee International Fencing Academy’ run by former national fencing team member Nam Hyun-hee in Jagok-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The front door into the academy was tightly locked. There was only silence in the empty indoor space visible through the large windows. There were students’ indoor sneakers lying on the floor. Bananas that had turned black were also noticeable.
On the glass door were notices such as ‘We are collaborating with Under Armour’ and ‘A fencing competition will be held’ and an A4 piece of paper with Mr. Nam’s resume written on it. However, there was no notice anywhere that operations had ended. Some residents and students passing by the academy took a peek inside.
Student A, who attended Nam’s academy, said, “I take classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but it has been closed since last Thursday (the 26th of last month). I came here because I was curious. I wanted to continue going, but I am embarrassed that it is closed.” She went on to say, “Teacher Nam Hyun-hee is a great person who has won many medals,” and that “she teaches her classes with passion.”
Mr. B, an acquaintance who visited Nam’s academy on behalf of a parent, pointed out, “My friend’s house is far away, so I came to check on his behalf.” He added, “There is no notice that the door is open or not open, and there is no word that a refund will be given if classes are not held.” She then said, “I contacted the school’s representative contact number, but there was no answer.”
Mr. B also added, “The fraud is Nam’s problem, but the parents and children are seeing the damage. We can wait only if Nam contacts us to tell him to rest. The response is inadequate.”

Citizens who met around the academy unanimously assumed that Mr. Nam felt burdened by running the academy. There are also suspicions that Jeon attempted to defraud the parents of Nam’s fencing academy. She said that Jeon demanded 30 million won in annual fees from her parents, claiming that she was running a sports psychology counseling club for children of the top 1% of high-ranking people. However, it has not yet been ascertained whether the parents of the fencing academy were actually victims of fraud by Mr. Jeon.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jeon was arrested by the police at a relative’s house in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do at around 3:52 pm the previous day on charges of fraud and attempted fraud, and was taken to Songpa Police Station. The police also searched and seized Signiel in Jamsil-dong, Songpa-gu, known as Jeon’s residence, and the residence of Jeon’s mother in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, and secured evidence related to Jeon’s charges.
