Nakstad on the pandemic: – We could have reopened society sooner in the spring of 2020

It was when Norway shut down during the corona pandemic on 12 March 2020 that Espen Rostrup was summoned and put in a 14-day temporary position as assistant director of health. He stayed for four and a half years and quit on Wednesday.

In an interview with The daily newspaper says Nakstad about things that could have been handled differently.

– I think we could have reopened society more quickly in the spring of 2020 if we had known how quickly the infection dropped when the measures were introduced, he tells the newspaper.

It turned out that people only infected those they lived with during the lockdown. After 14 days they had also been infected, so there was practically no further spread of infection in Norway.

– In the first year, the infection was in principle only in the Oslo region, and not the rest of the country. This means that many infection control measures in the rest of the country might not have been so necessary, he tells Dagbladet.

– But it could also mean that there could quickly be an outbreak elsewhere without infection control measures, which could have major consequences. But in the main, we have learned that the big cities are most vulnerable in a pandemic.

Nakstad is now returning to his old job as head of the National Treatment Service for CBRN medicine.

The field of CBRN includes particularly dangerous chemical substances (Chemical), biological agents (Biological), radiological radiation (Radiation), nuclear radiation (Nuclear), current explosives and their health-damaging effects, writes FHI.
