Nairobi – Morocco was elected on Wednesday in Nairobi to chair the Permanent General Assembly of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union (ECOSOCC-AU).
During the elections held on the occasion of the 1st ordinary session of the 4th permanent general assembly of ECOSOCC-AU, the President of the Moroccan association “Key to peace for development and solidarity,” Khalid Boudali, was elected president of the assembly for a mandate of 2 years.
In addition to the presidency, Morocco is represented at this permanent general assembly by three other members, who were also elected during the meeting which is being held from December 6 to 9 in the Kenyan capital.
They are Mrs. Fatima Dahbi, vice-president of the National Union of Moroccan Women (UNFM), Mohamed Azizi, of the Orient Occident Foundation and Mohamed Cheikh Lahlou of the International Association for Economic and Digital Development (AIDEN). .
Speaking on this occasion, the Kenyan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfred Mutua, congratulated the newly elected members, calling on them to assume leadership in favor of the development of the continent.
In a statement read on his behalf by the Principal Secretary of the Ministry, Abraham Sing’oei, the Kenyan Minister underscored the valuable contribution made by civil society organizations, under the aegis of ECOSOCC, towards strengthening African ownership of its peace and security agenda.
He further reiterated Kenya’s support for ECOSOCC in the accomplishment of its missions for the integration and development of Africa.
For his part, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, whose speech was read by the Technical Advisor on Regional Integration, Rosette Nyirinkindi, assured that the African Union will continue to provide platforms and tools to civil society organizations so that they can play their crucial role in realizing the goals and aspirations of the AU Agenda 2063.
ECOSOCC was established in July 2004 as an advisory body composed of different social and professional groups from AU Member States.
Its mission is to give African civil society organizations the opportunity to play an active role in the development and implementation of the principles, policies and programs of the Union.
The General Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of ECOSOCC. Its role is to submit advisory opinions, reports, as well as proposals on the budget and activities of ECOSOCC.
