The Russian Defense Ministry said that Armenian fighters from Nagorno-Karabakh have begun to hand over their weapons and military equipment.

Armenian separatists in the Nagorno Karabakh enclave handed over 6 armored vehicles, 800 light weapons and 5,000 munitions, the Russian peace force reported this Friday. Azerbaijan bombed the disputed region on Tuesday in hopes of ending the decades-long conflict.

The delivery of weapons is in line with the ceasefire proposed by Russia, which was announced on Wednesday. Russia is traditionally seen as the protector of Armenians and has its own troops stationed in the conflict region. Moscow also reported on Friday two ceasefire violations agreed.

40.000

According to the Armenian Prime Minister, 40,000 places have been prepared to accommodate Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh

Additionally, Russian troops claim to have provided fifty tons of humanitarian aid to the distressed population of Nagorno Karabakh. They also reportedly welcomed more than 800 people, more than half of whom are children.

In the meantime, Armenia is preparing a possible evacuation of Armenians from the disputed enclave. According to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, 40.000 places were prepared, “although it would be preferable if the Karabakh Armenians might stay at home”.

The much-disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh officially belongs to Azerbaijan, but it is mainly populated by Armenians. A situation that caused tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia for years and led to wars in the 1990s and in 2020.
