Melbourne: Former world number one Rafael Nadal has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open tennis grand slam.
Nadal, aiming for his 21st Grand Slam title, defeated German qualifier Yannick Hanfman in the second round. Score: 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
Nadal is the only remaining champion at Melbourne Park in the absence of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Rafa is the first player since Djokovic to win four Grand Slams twice.
World No. 126 Hanfman Nadal did not compete. The two first met at the 2019 French Open. Russia’s Karen Kachanovo will face France’s Benjamin Bonsio in the third round. Gael Monfils of France advanced to the third round following defeating Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan. Score: 6-1, 6-0, 6-4.
Naomi Osaka of Japan advanced to the third round of the women’s singles. Osaka defeated Madison Brinkle of the United States. Score: 6-0, 6-4. The match lasted one hour and five minutes.
Eighth seed Paula Badosa advanced to the third round for the first time in her career. Paula defeated Martina Travison 6-0, 6-3 in straight sets. US seeded Amanda Anisimova will face Osaka in the third round. Amanda defeated Belinda Benzic, the champion at the Tokyo Olympics. Score: 6-2, 7-5. U.S. Open champion and world number two Danil Medvedev will face Nick Kyrgios in the second round.
