Real Madrid, the runners-up of the Spanish Football League, on Thursday extended the contract of its veteran defender Jose Ignacio Fernandez Iglesias “Nacho” for an additional year, specifically until June 2024, according to the royal club.

Nacho has defended Real for 22 years, since joining the club’s under-11 academy team in 2001.

Nacho (33 years old) played 319 matches with the first team for Real, and won 23 titles, most notably the Champions League five times, and the local “La Liga” 3 times.

He also wore the “La Roja” shirt during 24 international matches, and was finally crowned champion of the third edition of the European Nations League 2023.

Nacho became the second player to extend his contract with Real, following German midfielder Toni Kroos (2024).

Nacho had previously told the local TVE channel, “There are always offers, but I decided to stay for an additional year.”

“I am happy with that and really look forward to continuing,” he added.

Real lost the efforts of its captain, French striker Karim Benzema, who signed with the Saudi Federation, while his contracts for the new season began with a deal with Borussia Dortmund, according to which the English young man, Jude Bellingham, moved to his ranks, and veteran striker Joselo also joined.
