NAC makes things difficult for FC Twente for a long time, but a striking penalty throws a spanner in Breda’s plans | NAC

Keep the ranks closed, have the organization in order and hope for that one moment in the enemy sixteen. NAC’s approach to the game in away games against top teams is crystal clear. A tactic that seemed to work in Enschede for a long time, but in the final phase a penalty kick still led to a defeat against FC Twente: 1-0.

NAC coach Carl Hoefkens significantly changed the NAC starting eleven against FC Twente. He chose, among others, the experienced Terence Kongolo, who made his debut in yellow and black. The former international formed a five-man defense with Jan Van den Bergh, Leo Greiml and backs Boy Kemper and Cherrion Valerius.

In addition, he rewarded Roy Kuijpers and Kacper Kostorz, the match winner against Fortuna Sittard, with a starting place in the front. Dominik Janosek and Matthew Garbett, who both performed poorly against Feyenoord, had to start from the bench, as did striker Elias Mar Omarsson. Undoubtedly the lack of offensive momentum in the previous games played a role. An attempt by the trainer, but worth considering.

NAC held up well in the first fifteen minutes. There was no Twente storm from the first whistle. The home team mainly looked for danger in depth through the fast Sayf Ltaief and the revivals of Sem Steijn and the people of Breda aimed for a quick breakout.

Repetitive image

Steijn, the man in form, was there with the first danger. Through a quick breakout on the left side, the ball arrived at his feet. However, he shot high over NAC keeper Daniel Bielica’s goal. Moments later, FC Twente striker Sam Lammers was unable to slide a cross into the goal. It was survival for NAC in that phase, but knocking on the door yourself? That actually didn’t work. A repetitive image, because that is how NAC also played in De Kuip.

NAC tried to take time where it could and substitute Boyd Lucassen had to pay for it early in the second half with a yellow card. A statement from referee Martin van den Kerkhof, but shortly afterwards it was the away team that created danger through a long shot from Kostorz. Hoefkens also received another card for ‘commenting on the leadership’. No direct red this time, but a warning via a yellow. He sympathizes deeply, but will have to work on the correct way of ‘communication’ with the arbitrators.

Result?

The more the match progressed, the more the NAC felt that a result could be achieved in Enschede. FC Twente lacked strength in the second half and NAC remained in good position, despite the injury of the solidly playing Kongolo.

Kemper took a ball off the line twenty minutes before then and celebrated it as a victory with a big scream, but that was a prelude to a big final offensive from the team that kept Manchester United at 1-1 on Wednesday. Greiml committed a foul by making a late tackle in his own box. Ricky van Wolfswinkel aimed for the penalty and hit the target: 1-0.

Hoefkens made three attacking substitutions, but NAC no longer really became dangerous. They fought for what they were worth, but lost again in the fourth away game of the season. Next Saturday NEC will visit Breda.

FC Twente – NAC 1-0 (0-0). 1-0 Van Wolfswinkel (pen.).

NAC line-up: Bielica, Valerius (46. Lucassen), Greiml, Van den Bergh, Kongolo (60. Mahmutovic), Kemper (78. Omarsson), Oldrup Jensen (78. Janosek), Balard, Kuijpers, Kostorz and Sauer (78. Fernandes).
