Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has enacted several laws affecting ethnic minorities. Now the black civil rights organization NAACP is reacting.
WASHINGTON, DC/Florida – A major black civil rights organization has issued an official warning once morest traveling to the US state of Florida. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) released Saturday (May 20) on your website a travel warning, which she justifies with the policies of Governor Ron DeSantis. Florida has “become openly hostile to black Americans” and they are “not welcome there”.
The NAACP statement said Florida, under Republican DeSantis, launched “a radical attack on black Americans, correct black history, the right to vote, members of the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, women’s reproductive rights and freedom of expression.” While promoting “a culture of fear, bullying and intimidation” by public officials. US media reports that DeSantis will shortly announce his presidential candidacy. The 44-year-old is considered the fiercest competitor of ex-US President Donald Trump.
Florida travel warning: NAACP responds to ‘aggressive’ behavior by DeSantis
The NAACP’s travel advisory is a direct response to DeSantis’ “aggressive attempts” to “eradicate black history and restrict diversity, equality and inclusion programs in Florida schools.” In March, the school board banned the African American Studies elective in high schools. Before that, a law was passed that would penalize teachers who let schoolchildren read “harmful” books dealing with LGBTQ and racism issues. DeSantis recently signed into law prohibiting state universities from using federal or state funds for diversity programs. DeSantis’ press secretary, Jeremy Redfern, told Newsweek that the NAACP’s travel advisory was a “public relations stunt.”
Not all minorities are affected by Florida’s discriminatory laws
According to the NAACP, those planning to travel to Florida should be aware that public schools there “do not teach truthful African-American history that includes the history of enslavement, of segregation [„Rassentrennung“, Anm. d. Red.], which encompasses ethnic injustice and systemic racism”. In addition, the NAACP in Florida warns once morest “open hostility towards African Americans and people of color”.
Trip to Florida? Organizations warn migrants and sexual minorities
As early as April, organizations for the rights of migrants and sexual minorities had warned once morest traveling and moving to Florida. On its own website, the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) warns once morest “racial profiling, increased controls and unauthorized arrests” of non-white people. The organization Equality Florida comes to the assessment that the state is hostile to the LGBTQ community due to current laws. She said Florida “may not be a safe place” to travel or reside because of “risks to health, safety and liberty.”
However, not all minorities are equally affected by the discriminatory laws of the right-wing DeSantis government in Florida. A new law there mandates that public schools must teach the history of Asian Americans, as well as those of Pacific Islander ancestry. At the same time, DeSantis also recently signed a law that prohibits people with Chinese citizenship from buying real estate in Florida. (Johanna Soll)
