N26: digital bank closes users’ Pix keys after the end of operations in Brazil

N26, a digital bank, is notifying its users regarding the automatic cancellation of their Pix keys following the end of operations in Brazil. This means that customers of the extinct fintech in the country will be able to use their keys — CPF, telephone number or email address — in other banks without the need for portability.

The company unlinked the Pix keys at the end of 2023. Previously, if the user wanted to link one of the keys to another bank, it was necessary to carry out the migration through the application. Now, there is no need to go through the process to register your identification data in the instant payment system at third-party banks.

The fintech, which began its activities in the national market in 2021, promised advantages to compete with the most popular digital banks in Brazil, including Nubank and C6 Bank. One of the highlights was its transparent physical card and “Spaces”, similar to Nubank’s “Caixinhas”, which allowed the creation of a reserve for a specific purpose.

In November 2023, N26 announced its departure from Brazil. The objective was to reinforce its strategy that focuses on key European markets, where its largest volume of users is concentrated. At the time, around 800,000 people were still on the waiting list, and thousands of customers had opened an account with the digital bank.

In December 2023, N26 began canceling credit cards and removing functions from the application in Brazil, leaving only basic functions that allowed users to transfer their balance to other accounts. The service ended on December 18.
