The N-VA presents itself as the alternative solution to a continuation of the federal coalition Vivaldi, which wants to continue to widen the deficits on the backs of the Flemings, suggested its president, Bart De Wever, on Sunday, at the end of a congress of Flemish nationalists, in Ghent.
Bart De Wever says he is ready to become Prime Minister in the event of a strong mandate from the elector. For him, only the N-VA is able to initiate a real change in policy.
Flemish nationalists place the defense of Flemish prosperity at the heart of their electoral message. They point the finger at the debt, which continued to swell during the last legislature, while taxes in Belgium are already among the highest.
Bart De Wever: “In Brussels, as elsewhere, the N-VA wants to torpedo the Vivaldi”
Bart De Wever targets the PS program, which according to him means even more social spending and even more taxes. “Our research department counted more than 10 billion euros of new taxes in the program (PS, Editor’s note). When I explained this to Magnette, he laughed once more: it’s even a little more. And he didn’t even try to contradict the fact that the north will have to pay 70 to 80% of this amount.” “No more Vivaldi, no more pressing and making fun of the working Flemish, no more management without a Flemish majority,” thundered the president of the N-VA, whose party is losing ground in the polls.
According to Bart De Wever, voting for the Vivaldi parties or for the “extremes”, such as the Vlaams Belang or the PTB/PVDA, opens the way to a continuation of the current government. Only a vote for the N-VA can lead to a paradigm shift, according to him, and this must happen as part of a transition to confederalism.
De Wever talks regarding “secret agreements” for the next elections and makes party presidents jump
On the sidelines of the congress, the president of the N-VA also reacted to the recent release in La Libre of the presidents of the MR and the CD&V. Georges-Louis Bouchez and Sammy Mahdi have indicated that they are ready to join forces in a future federal majority in order to oppose a hypothetical “PS/N-VA axis” the day following the elections on June 9. Bart De Wever only sees “diversions from parties who only want a Vivaldi II. They have already raised the white flag”. The president of the N-VA hardly believes in the center-right programs of the liberals and Christian Democrats. “Look at what they did during the last legislature.”
Finally, Mr. De Wever repeated his message: the other Flemish parties must no longer count on the N-VA to form a Flemish government if they continue federally with the current coalition which does not have a majority on the Flemish side. Would he then be ready to form a government with Vlaams Belang? “This discussion is not on the agenda,” says Bart De Wever.
