The N-VA wants to see the number of refugees welcomed in Belgium in the coming years reduced to a minimum, “or even zero”, relying on the new European migration pact. “If the States can pay compensation, we intend to make use of it,” indicates the Flemish nationalist party on Saturday in De Standaard.
Last year, 12,355 people were recognized as refugees in Belgium. They have the right to stay there for five years, before possibly benefiting from unlimited authorization. For the N-VA, however, the influx should be reduced to its strictest minimum for “at least a few years”.
Here is why the N-VA will be (almost) essential in 2024 and why Bart De Wever might be our future Prime Minister
De Standaard questioned all Flemish parties on the issue. Five out of seven (Vooruit, Open VLD, CD&V, N-VA and Vlaams Belang) are in favor of limiting the reception of asylum seekers. The position of the N-VA now joins the most radical, expressed by Vlaams Belang.
“Allowing people to come without being able to welcome them is inhumane,” Minister-President Jan Jambon explained on Saturday morning on Radio 1 (VRT).
