Last spring, Open Vld asked the N-VA to join forces. “We are strong enough to present ourselves before the voters alone,” explains Raf De Canck, president of the N-VA Lubbeek. “But we share a lot of common values and battle points with Open Vld. After several discussions, we decided to join forces.”
The Open Vld group has so far led “constructive opposition”, says group leader Pascale Alaerts. “We also approved many points in the city council, as they were in the interest of the residents. With the CD&V, the current coalition partner of the N-VA, the cooperation will be maintained in the coming months.
Obtaining an absolute majority in October is “not an obvious thing”, recognizes Mr. Francken, leading figure of the N-VA, but it is the ambition. “We will at least try to become the largest party. After the elections we will form a group with Open Vld anyway.
Alongside the announcement of the partnership, the first five seats were presented. Theo Francken draws the list, N-VA aldermen An Wouters, Davy Suffeleers and Tania Roskams take the next places. In fifth position, Pascale Alaerts becomes the first member of the Open Vld. The full list will be announced at the N-VA New Year’s Reception at the end of January.
