Mystery of Dead Dogs Found on Belgian Beaches: Investigation Underway

What happened to cause seven dead dogs to be found washed up on the beaches of the Belgian coast, between Ostend and Oostduinkerke? This is the question asked by residents, who discovered the poor dead animals on the sand between November 13 and December 28, reports the Newspaper. Five of the seven stranded carcasses were found in Ostend, the others in Nieuwpoort and Oostduinkerke, a maximum distance of 25km.

The corpses all appear to be those of young greyhound-type dogs, with long legs, and none are microchipped. While it is difficult to say with certainty that they belong to the same breed or even the same litter, the similarities between the carcasses are great.

What leads so far?

The Ostend police initially raised the possibility of recent floods due to the overflowing of the Yser, in which the animals might have perished. But seven corpses start to do a lot for such a hypothesis, especially since no one has reported the disappearance of their pet until now.

To our Flemish colleagues, marine biologist Francis Kerckhof affirms that the possibility of the seven dogs being abandoned at sea, in the same place, is implausible, even if it would be possible despite the dispersion of the carcasses on different beaches. He favors the hypothesis of animals which would have been kept locked up somewhere, perhaps even in France, and which the floods had freed. Unfortunately, the dogs did not survive.

An investigation is underway, and will determine whether the dogs found died of drowning, or before being swept away by the waters. And in the second case, then determine what is hidden behind these sad discoveries.
