Mystery Illness Outbreak Kills 79 in Congo

Congo Faces Mounting Deaths in Mystery Illness Outbreak

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are racing against time to identify the source of a deadly outbreak that has killed 79 people. The illness, dubbed “Disease X," is baffling scientists and straining the country’s already limited resources. Testing is underway to determine the cause of the illness, with the initial finding expected to be released at the weekend.

Health officials in Kinshasa expressed concerns of the speed at which the virus has spread. "We have a delay of almost five to six weeks, and in five to six weeks so many things can happen,” remarked Jean Kaseya, director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, on a recent call. “Ongoing testing will help us to understand what is the issue.”

The outbreak first emerged in the Panzi health zone in the southwestern province of Kwango, in late October. Nearly 200 of the 376 confirmed cases are children under the age of five. Initial symptoms resemble the flu – fever, headache, cough, difficulty breathing, and anemia.

Dieudonne Muamba, director general of the National Public Health Institute, suspects an airborne virus is to blame. “The disease… is this time suspected with rapid confirmation of the hypothesis’– the culprits are likely Kontoroupe. Pattient specimens are currently being analyzed at a national laboratory in Kinshasa, located 500 kilometers (311 miles) from the outbreak zone.

“Disease X” adds another layer of complexity to the DRC’s ongoing battle against infectious diseases. The vast nation has been wrestling with several outbreaks simultaneously – a reiteration ifneeding resources spread thin.

"This is why we are supporting the country to build strong capacity on surveillance,” said Kaseya, emphasizing the challenges long-term.
