Why Europe Needs Ariane 6
The Ariane 6 rocket is intended to replace the Ariane 5 rocket, which was in service since 1996 and was decommissioned in 2023. The new rocket is produced in two versions: the lighter Ariane 62 and the heavier Ariane 64. The Ariane 62, equipped with two solid-fuel side boosters, can carry a payload of up to 5 tons. In contrast, the Ariane 64, with four boosters, can launch up to 10.5 tons into orbit.
Ariane 6 is set to become the Falcon 9’s main competitor for European customers. Over the past year, important European satellites have been launched using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, including two satellites that were originally planned to be launched via Arianespace. The European Meteorological Agency even cancelled its contract to launch Ariane 6 in favor of SpaceX.
Not only was this event a significant achievement for the European Space Agency, it also left a mark of wonder for those who witnessed it in the night sky.
