**This week on Archyde, we have the pleasure of speaking with Czech photographer tomáš Poláček, whose extraordinary talent recently earned him recognition in the prestigious Top Photo 2024 series. Tomáš,congratulations on this achievement!**
**Archyde:** your photographs showcased in Top Photo 2024 capture the unique beauty of Prague’s everyday urban scenes. What initially drew you too explore these often-overlooked aspects of the city?
**Tomáš:** Prague is undeniably famous for its iconic landmarks and fairytale charm. Though,I’m drawn to its hidden stories,the poetry found in its quiet corners and unexpected juxtapositions. It’s the interplay of light and shadow, the way nature weaves its way through the urban fabric—these are the elements that intrigue me.
**Archyde:** You primarily work as a photojournalist for Aktuálně.cz. How do your personal projects, like those featured in Top Photo 2024, differ in approach or subject matter?
**Tomáš:** My work at aktuálně.cz involves capturing the news, documenting current events.It’s fast-paced and frequently enough demands a very direct approach. In contrast, my personal projects allow me to explore my own creative vision. They’re a chance to slow down, savor the details, and seek out beauty in the mundane.
**Archyde:** You recently achieved a significant milestone by earning your doctorate from the Institute of Creative Photography. How has your academic background influenced your artistic practice?
**Tomáš:** studying at the Institute of Creative Photography allowed me to deepen my understanding of photographic theory, history, and technique. It also exposed me to the work of countless visionary photographers, which has been a constant source of inspiration.
**Archyde:** Your photography displays a clear admiration for the late Czech master, Josef Sudek. Can you tell us more about Sudek’s influence on your work?
**Tomáš:** Sudek was a true master of light and shadow.his ability to create images that are both deeply poetic and emotionally charged has always inspired me. I strive to capture a similar sense of atmosphere in my own work, using light and composition to evoke a specific mood or feeling.
**Archyde:** Prague is a city rich in history and photographic potential. What advice would you give to aspiring photographers looking to capture its essence?
**Tomáš:** Don’t just focus on the obvious landmarks. Explore the lesser-known alleys, peek into hidden courtyards, and observe the everyday life unfolding around you. Be patient,be observant,and let the city guide your lens.
