Chelsea recently signed Ukrainian player Mykhailo Modric from the Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk, in a deal that cost the English club 70 million euros.
The 22-year-old Mykhailo, who plays as a left winger, has never played outside Ukraine.
The Ukrainian player raised his position this year in the Champions League, following scoring three goals and two assists, with his team in the group stage, one once morest German Leipzig and two goals once morest Celtic, Scotland.
Before this season, he had not scored more than two goals in his 47 appearances with three Ukrainian local teams.
Modric participated with his country in eight matches. He did not score more than 12 goals during his entire football career.
But his presence was remarkable this season, even in the local Ukrainian championship, which was not completed due to the Russian invasion.
Modric had scored a goal or an assist every 65 minutes, during this season of the Ukrainian Premier League.
He won the best player award in his team for the second year in a row.
And Modric will cost the Blues club additional sums in the form of bonuses of 30 million euros.
Modric’s contract with the London club is eight and a half years.
The reason for the high value of the deal may be due to the fact that Shakhtar Donetsk has lost all of its foreign players, following FIFA’s decision allowing non-Ukrainian players to suspend their contracts in Ukraine as a result of the war.
The Ukrainian club demanded compensation from FIFA in the amount of 43 million following this decision. It is possible that Shakhtar Donetsk has raised the price of the player’s sale given his value to the club.
Over the weekend, Modric expressed his ambition to win the Ballon d’Or.
“I think Modric can win the Ballon d’Or in the future,” said the current Brighton coach, Italian Roberto De Zerbi, who led Shakhtar in 2021 and 2022.
“I am sure that Mykhailo will win the respect, sympathy and love of all world football experts with his pace, technique and amazing, amazing game,” said Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov.
Chelsea described Modric as “a skilful player with great speed” and “one of the most dangerous attacking players in Europe in the event of a player-to-player confrontation”.
“He (Modrik) is a very exciting talent, who we believe will be a great addition to our team now and in the years to come,” Blues chairman Todd Bohle and co-owner Behdad Eghbali added in a statement.
