Remembering Mya: A Family’s Mission to Raise Awareness about Meningitis
A year after losing their daughter Mya to meningitis,Mabel and Ted are sharing their story to prevent other families from enduring the same unimaginable loss. “On September 1st, and on her birthday, we remember Mya – though we do that every day, and we always will,” Mabel shared. While time has brought some healing, the pain of Mya’s passing remains profound. “It’s hard, but we are coping better now. I quickly became pregnant again. That was stunning,but also very difficult,” Mabel confided. ” The pregnancy was not easy at all, operations were needed so that our son was not born earlier. This happened in the same hospital where we first went with Mya.That brought with it a lot of emotions.” their son’s arrival brought joy and a renewed sense of purpose. “Now we are of course very happy that he came into our lives.He really gives our lives color again. We are very grateful for that. He keeps us going – and of course we keep each other going.”A Cuddly Angel with a Mission
In honor of Mya, Mabel and Ted created the MYAngel cuddly toy, which looks like their precious daughter. As December 23rd, they’ve been selling these special toys, with all proceeds benefiting the itsme foundation. The foundation funds vital research into meningitis and raises awareness about the disease. “the cuddly toy is really beautiful,” Mabel said. “Mya is a guardian angel for other children.”
Mabel’s determination to prevent other families from facing this tragedy is unwavering. “I share Mya’s story to prevent it from happening again. I really hope that more attention is paid to meningitis, so that it is more researched and recognized earlier. This simply cannot,and should not happen.”

**Archyde:** Thank you for joining us today, Mabel. it’s been a year since you lost your daughter mya to meningitis. Can you share with us what led to that heartbreakingly difficult day?
**Mabel:**
It happened so suddenly. Mya seemed to recover from an illness, but then she developed a high fever and became weak.We rushed her to the doctor, but despite our concerns about meningitis, they dismissed it.Tragically,Mya’s condition worsened rapidly,leading to seizures.
**Archyde:** What happened at the hospital?
**Mabel:**
Mya was admitted to Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen. They gave her medicine and IV fluids, but the damage to her brain was already severe. It was heartbreaking to realize ther was nothing more they could do. We had to say goodbye to our precious daughter on September 1st,2023.
**Archyde:** Your loss is unimaginable.What do you hope people will learn from mya’s story?
**Mabel:**
Firstly, I want to raise awareness about meningitis. It’s difficult to diagnose,especially in babies. Doctors need more training and we need greater awareness about its symptoms. But more importantly, parents need to trust their instincts. You know your child best.
**Archyde:** That’s a powerful message. Since Mya’s passing, you have welcomed a son into the world.How have you navigated grief and joy amidst such a profound loss?
**Mabel:**
It’s been incredibly challenging, to be honest. My pregnancy with our son wasn’t easy, and there where many emotional triggers, especially being back in the same hospital where we lost mya.
However, our son has been a source of light and purpose. He keeps us going and reminds us of the beauty and joy that still exists in the world.

**Mabel:**
The MYAngel cuddly toy looks just like Mya. Everything from the selling of it goes to the itsme foundation that researches meningitis.
Mya is our guardian angel, and we hope this toy will help protect other children from this terrible disease.
