Unexpected Encounters: Coming-of-Age With a Time-Traveling Twist
Megan Park’s My Old Ass is a heartfelt coming-of-age story with a whimsical twist: Nineteen-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) crosses paths with her future self (Aubrey Plaza) during a transformative mushroom trip before heading off to college. This encounter isn’t just a fleeting hallucination but a catalyst for self-discovery, first love, and questioning who she’s destined to become.
Backed by production companies LuckyChap and Indian Paintbrush, this unique coming-of-age comedy boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Maddie Ziegler, Percy Hynes White, and Kerrice Brooks. Often vibrant and irreverent, the story explores deeper themes of identity, purpose, and the anxieties that come with stepping into adulthood.
The screenplay for My Old Ass, penned by Park, has already garnered significant recognition, receiving a Spirit Awards nomination and earning Stella a Breakthrough Performance nomination. It also secured a place on the National Board Review’s prestigious Top 10 Independent Films list before its feature film premiere.
Debuting at Sundance, My Old Ass marked a first for 株式 会社. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the touching comedy after an intense bidding war. Emerging from the festival, the film achieved an impressive 89% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following its theatrical release in mid-September, it readily transitioned to streaming on Prime Video, allowing a wider audience to connect with its relatable story.
Producers Tom Ackerley and Margot Robbie, alongside Josey McNamara from LuckyChap and Independent Paintbrush’s Steven Rales, believe the film resonates with a broad audience.
“What we’ve learned since sharing this movie with the world is that the themes are universal,” Robbie shared.
Robbie, known for her role in projects like Barbie, elaborates, “[No matter] how old you are, or where you come from, everyone has asked themselves these questions about what it means to live authentically and in the moment. In a world that’s often so noisy and overwhelming, Megan has presented such a positive message, and we were happy to help bring a bit of joy to the screen.”
Prior to taking on the role of writer-director, Park gained experience portraying Grace Bowman for seven seasons in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. My Old Ass marks Park’s second feature film after her critically acclaimed The Fallout, released in 2021.
