“My husband is intubated in Italy and I still don’t have a passport”

The difficulties in renewing a passport do not only affect people who wish to travel, some of them must obtain it to join a loved one who is sick abroad.

This is the case of Lucie Fontaine, originally from Saint-Ambroise-de-Kildare, in Lanaudière, who is trying to obtain her passport as quickly as possible in order to join her Italian husband who is intubated in a hospital in Italy.

“I just want to bawl. I’ve been in there for two days,” she testified Wednesday morning in line in front of the Service Canada center located on Marcel-Laurin Boulevard in Montreal.

The lady first went to a service center in Laval, but the line was bigger than the one she was waiting for on Wednesday, she said.

“I have a paper from the doctor ordering me to go to Italy because my husband is already there. He’s not really well, he’s intubated, and I’m having trouble getting my passport,” explained Ms. Fontaine.

Her husband was on oxygen on Monday, and now he’s intubated and in a semi-coma.

“The problem is not there, it is here.”

Even if her flight is scheduled for Sunday, Lucie Fontaine would be ready to leave earlier, because she fears that the state of health of her spouse is deteriorating. She is also the only one who can make decisions for him.

But, for the moment, she still does not have her passport.
