Mexico City, Nov 4 (EFE).- Colombian singer Camilo presented this Monday in Mexico his new tour of the country in a meeting with journalists in which he surrendered to the influence of Mexican music in Colombia and confessed that his first “Hero of the song” was the ranchera singer-songwriter José Alfredo Jiménez (1926-1973).
The artist returns to Mexico where this Wednesday he will offer the first of three concerts at the National Auditorium in the capital, after which he will travel to Monterrey on Friday and will end in Guadalajara this Sunday.
«My first hero of the song when I was very little and he still is is José Alfredo Jiménez, that is, for me it was like always feeling that my songs were very weak, because next to one of José Alfredo it was like (wondering) “Why can’t I write like that?” the Colombian acknowledged about his Mexican references.
Camilo is fascinated by the current explosion of Mexican music with artists of the stature of Peso Pluma or Fuerza Régida gaining international weight: “I love everything that is happening with all the aspects of the sound of Mexico.”
«Mexico has been part of my music all the time in regards to creativity and my work, but apart from that when my music was received by Mexico, the moment when my first album I suddenly realized that I was connecting with “Mexico changed my life in every aspect,” the artist reflects on the impact the country has had on his career.
Now the Colombian undertakes a tour of Mexico after having done the same on stages in Europe, something that after his recent fatherhood, his son Amaranto was born a few months ago, could have been complicated if he had not managed to manage it as he has done.
«I am creating by hand a world that looks like what I dream of, which is a world in which I do not leave my house and say: ‘well, girls, I love you, see you in six weeks when it’s over. the tour of Europe’. No, I wouldn’t be able to do that, at least at this moment, the person I am today wouldn’t be able to,” explains the Colombian.
For the artist “it is easier to achieve success than to achieve happiness while you are successful”, and that is why he does not allow separation from his family during his tours and takes his wife and daughters with him.
In his new album, Camilo experiments with sounds different from his usual romantic urban style and tries salsa and other rhythms that go a little out of his comfort zone.
«None of these sounds that I made on this album are sounds that I master, that is, I am not a native salsa singer. I have always listened to salsa and I love it and I know it and I enjoy it, but I was not dedicated to salsa (…) I am a tourist, a fascinated tourist,” summarizes the artist about an album that has earned him three nominations for the next Grammys.
