MX3D installed the first M1 WAAM system in Canada. The AM system is located at Dalhousie University. The researchers will use the M1 to conduct projects together with Canadian companies from various sectors, from construction to engineering.
The Canadian university aims to become the number 1 WAAM service provider in Canada when it comes to new research projects. “The adoption of WAAM technology in Nova Scotia is an important step forward for the region’s academic research and industrial application capabilities. It serves as a catalyst for innovation and growth in these sectors by providing a platform for researchers and industry professionals to explore the full potential of this technology,” says Professor Ali Nasiri regarding the underlying purpose of the university’s investment.
University is also open to international cooperation partners
User-friendly WAAM system
The M1 metal AM system is the compact turnkey WAAM system from the Dutch manufacturer MX3D. Robot, welding generator and MX3D’s own software are integrated in one shielded production cell. Ali Nasiri mentions, among other things, the user-friendliness as one of the strengths of the M1. That makes it easy for students and professionals who are trained to work with the technology. The university in Nova Scotia wants to use the M1 to meet the demand from industry partners. As the demand for WAAM grows, Nasiri aims to develop advanced testing and monitoring methods to fully exploit the technology’s potential. Professionals from the Canadian industry will also be trained with it. The university will also support these companies in validating WAAM for specific applications or specific materials.
Powerful data processing software
The Dutch manufacturer applies the self-developed MetalXL software in the M1. It can also be used in combination with an industrial robot and a welding system. Professor Nasiri calls the MetalXL software a powerful tool for collecting data and making it accessible. “Such data is essential for effective monitoring and control of the process. In addition, MetalXL offers a visual representation of the most important process parameters, allowing quick and targeted insight into the large data set.” The university is also open to cooperation with international partners who want to explore the possibilities of WAAM.
