Mutual Services Blood Bank calls for donating platelets

The executive director of the Medical Services Administration (ASEM), Jorge Matta González, called on regular donors and the general public on Wednesday to donate platelets of all blood groups, for the benefit of cancer patients, people undergoing complex surgeries and those with coagulation disorders.

“Platelet donation can save between one and three lives, but it needs to be an ongoing process due to their short lifespan. “Platelets cannot be produced artificially, and their availability can make the difference between life and death for many patients.”expressed Matta González in written statements.

The medical director of ASEM, Israel Ayala Oliveras, highlighted that platelets are essential for coagulation and prevention of bleeding, especially in patients undergoing chemotherapy, transplants, or who suffer serious accidents. He explained that platelets only last five days, which requires a constant supply of donations.

Donations are made through a specialized apheresis procedure, which lasts 90 minutes to two hours. Those interested in donating platelets must be between 21 and 70 years old, weigh more than 130 pounds, and be in good health. Additionally, appointments can be arranged by calling (787) 777-3844 or writing to [email protected].
