The declaration was held in Fatumnasi Village, Fatumnasi District, South Central Timor Regency (TTS), located at the foot of Mount Mutis Timau. Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya hit the gong online as a sign of the inauguration of the national park from Denpasar, Bali.

The 78,789-hectare (ha) Mount Mutis Timau National Park is the 56th national park in Indonesia, covering three districts, namely Kupang, South Central Timor, and North Central Timor (TTU). Previously, this area had the status of a nature reserve (CA).

With this inauguration, the total area of ​​national parks in Indonesia has increased to 16.2 million ha or 60.4% of the total conservation area, which is 26.8 million ha.

According to Siti Nurbaya, the declaration was made after the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number 946 of 2024 on June 30, 2024 concerning Changes in Functions in the Main Functions of the Mutis Nature Reserve to a National Park and Changes in Functions Between the Main Functions of the Mutis Protected Forest Area to a National Park.
