From his nickname “El Taliban”, Mustafa Maya Amaya, 59, is originally from Brussels and has Spanish nationality.
He was arrested in Spain and was already known to the local authorities as reported by our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws.
The man had already been arrested in 2014 for recruiting fighters for the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. In 2018, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. In addition, Mustafa Amaya is said to have sent more than 600 fighters to Syria. Being in a wheelchair, the jihadist recruiter has never been in combat. His recruitment was mainly done via social networks. According to Iberian justice, Amaya is the largest recruiter of terrorists in Europe.
Spanish police hope that thanks to this arrest, attacks like the one that hit Brussels last week will be avoided.
