MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Aiming to boost its appeal as a filmmaking hub, the newly established Muskogee Film organization operates under the umbrella of the Muskogee Tourism Authority.
In a bid to draw filmmakers to the city, Muskogee Film is now providing monetary grants to encourage creators to produce their projects in Muskogee. This initiative represents a significant investment in the local creative economy, showcasing the city’s commitment to the arts and entertainment sectors.
“Being a part of this growing industry, the film industry, is just phenomenal,” said Executive Director William Lowe. “For us, it’s an incentive, it’s a way to say look, here’s what Muskogee’s about.” Lowe emphasized that this program serves not only as a financial encouragement but also as a platform to highlight the unique character and potential of Muskogee.
Filmmakers interested in producing music videos or commercials can receive grants of up to $5,000, while those aiming to shoot TV shows may qualify for funding of up to $15,000. Furthermore, creators looking to film feature-length movies in the area can benefit from grants as high as $25,000.
We took the initiative to engage with residents across the city to gather their perspectives on the new initiative and its potential impact on the community.
“I really think that it would be good for the city, I mean, there’s like potential growth here for sure,” shared Kristine Davis, a resident who moved to Muskogee about a year ago. Davis expressed her optimism about the city’s future while acknowledging that, like many burgeoning communities, it will require thoughtful precautions and guidelines for local residents and business owners to effectively manage the influx of visitors expected from this initiative.
William Lowe underscored the importance of communication with residents, asserting, “They will get all the parameters, everything they can see, everything these filmmakers will be able to see and indulge in once they come to Muskogee.” He is dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment where the local community feels informed and engaged.
In addition, Lowe announced that a comprehensive website will launch in February 2025, providing updates and crucial information about the program and ongoing initiatives. This platform will serve as a central hub for resources, including press releases, benefiting both filmmakers and the local community alike.
If you are interested in participating in the program, there are five steps:
- Project intake form
- Scouting shooting locations
- Film incentive applications
- Final film incentive application
While the main website is being set up, Lowe encourages interested creators to visit the Film Friendly Muskogee site for more information.
