The owner of the X platform, the American billionaire Elon Musk, hinted that the social network formerly known as “Twitter” will not remain free.
In a live broadcast conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk said that the company “is moving to charging a small monthly fee for using the platform,” indicating that such a change will be necessary to deal with the problem of automated accounts “bots” on the platform. “It’s the only way I can think of to fight massive armies of automated accounts,” Musk explained. He did not mention the cost of the new subscription, but described it as “a small amount of money.”
During the conversation, Musk revealed new statistics for the platform, noting that it now includes 550 million monthly users, generating between 100 and 200 million posts daily.
Musk did not expand on his plan to charge X fees or when such a change might occur. But since Musk acquired the platform late last October, the company has been pushing its users to subscribe to its X Premium service, formerly known as Twitter Blue.
For $8 per month or $84 per year, the subscription service offers a variety of features, such as the ability to edit posts, cut the number of ads displayed in half, prioritized labels in search and conversations, the ability to write longer posts, and more.
