After being bitten by a spider last August, an Atlanta musician came close to losing his leg last August, according to the New York Post.

Gabe Lustman said he doesn’t know the exact moment he was bitten by a venomous brown recluse spider. At first he thought he had been bitten by a mosquito.

“I started scratching,” said the 30-year-old man. I thought I had hit myself, because I had a bruise.”

He first noticed the spider bite on August 18. The next day, Gabe Lustman felt so ill that he had to go to the hospital, where he stayed for five days. The musician received several antibiotics.

Before leaving the hospital, doctors told him that if he had waited any longer to go to the hospital, he might have lost his leg or died.

“I still waited until I might no longer walk, I was limping,” explained the main person concerned. I mightn’t put any pressure on my leg.”

“I was scared,” he added. I’m really grateful to have escaped with my leg.”

The brown recluse spider is most commonly found in the Midwest and southern United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Brown recluse venom can destroy skin tissue.

Georgia Poison Control Center Executive Director Gaylord Lopez said his center receives three to five calls a month for such bites.
