Music can have many effects on us, including improving our physical and mental state by helping to reduce blood pressure and stress, a therapist believes.

In particular, music can help release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that affects our mood and sense of happiness, according to research.

Raymond Leone, a therapist working in a hospital, uses music to reduce his patients’ anxiety.

“I start with music that matches the patient’s state of mind and slowly move on to more soothing themes,” Mr. Leone reported, in the Washington Post.

“I find that their mood often follows. It’s called training. We embark on the music and we follow it, mentally and physically,” he continued.

The therapist also recounted her experience with a 40-year-old diagnosed with cancer who was devastated by the disease, but also sad for some reason she might not explain.

“We talked regarding music and his favorite music. She mentioned that she enjoyed listening to Fleetwood Mac, and especially the song Landslide, Mr. Leone wrote. I played and sang it for her. She cried and at the end she said, ‘I know why I’m so upset, I’m worried regarding my children.

The author of the article also explained that when a person is gripped by panic or anxiety, they sometimes cannot describe what they are feeling in words. The lyrics of a song might therefore help to put words to the evils.

“One of the beautiful things regarding music is that it’s subjective, and you use it in a personal way. We can explore different ways to use music, all types of music, to help us in our lives when we need it.

The specialist offers ideas for using music to combat anxiety:

“When you’re feeling anxious, instead of finding ‘relaxing’ music, create a playlist personal and let the footage guide you,” he explained.

Here are the steps Leone advises taking:

Start with music that matches your current mood. The first song can be a bit more intense than the others, with more tension or melancholy;

Then choose songs that will gradually lead you to a more relaxed state;

Use music you like.
