Doing between 30 and 60 minutes of muscle strengthening per week can reduce deaths by 10% to 20% according to a recent study.
Playing sports is good for your health, that’s nothing new. It is even recommended to practice 30 minutes of physical activity developing moderate to high intensity cardio-respiratory fitness at least five days a week. A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has just demonstrated that a weekly practice of 30 and 60 minutes of muscle strengthening activity can reduce the risk of death by 10 to 20%.
Between half an hour and an hour of muscle strengthening to reduce the risk of death
To reach this conclusion, the researchers came to analyze data from sixteen different studies. In detail, the number of participants in these studies ranged from 4,000 to 480,000 and their ages ranged from 18 to 97 years. All of this research has taken into account aerobics, other types of physical activity as well as muscle strengthening.
Thanks to these data, the researchers came to conclude that the practice of a muscle-strengthening activity made it possible to reduce the risk of death from all causes by 10 to 17%. This mainly concerns cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancers. However, they did not find an association between muscle building and a reduced risk of specific cancers.
The study states: A J-shaped curve emerged, with a maximum risk reduction of 10-20% at around 30-60 minutes/week of muscle-strengthening activities for all-cause death, cardiovascular disease, and all cancers “. In addition to this, the results showed that 60 minutes of muscle building a week offered diabetes benefits. Finally, the combination of muscle strengthening and aerobic activity would further reduce the risk of death from all causes.
