Murderer who escaped from Regensburg caught in France

Regensburg (dpa) – After the arrest of the convicted murderer who fled the Regensburg district court, the investigators want to publish details. This Tuesday there will be “more information”, said the police headquarters in Upper Palatinate last night. It had previously withdrawn the search for the 40-year-old. The wanted man was caught by investigators in France near the German border. No further details were given.

The Algerian escaped through a window in a courtroom during a break in the hearing last Thursday. According to the police, his shackles had been removed for an interview with his defense attorney. The judge had only ordered the handcuffs to be removed for the main hearing. There was no judicial order to remove the shackles. After the escape, more than 150 tips were received by the police. The man was also wanted internationally.

The convicted murderer and an accomplice attacked a lottery shop in Nuremberg in 2011 and killed the 76-year-old owner. In 2013 he was sentenced to life imprisonment and has been in prison in Straubing ever since. Last week he had to answer to the Regensburg district court for resisting law enforcement officials in the prison.

The Algerian’s defense attorney accused those responsible at the district court. Lawyer Moritz Schmitt-Fricke said “Focus Online” that the possibility of meeting with clients was poorly solved there in two respects. On the one hand, the lawyer criticized that the room had a frosted glass pane that was difficult to see into, on the other hand he criticized the unlocked windows.
