Will the death penalty, which existed only in legal provisions for 26 years with the last execution on December 30, 1997, be revived as a reality?

The demand for the reinstatement of the death penalty, which began with public outrage over a series of unprompted knife murders last summer, has also become a hot topic in the legal community. Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon said in August, “The death penalty is specified in the law in South Korea,” and following inspecting death penalty facilities in each region, death row inmates from all over the country were herded into the Seoul Detention Center. The Minister of Justice is the authority to order the execution of the death penalty as prescribed by the Criminal Procedure Act.

Candidate Cho Hee-dae, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, also opposed the question regarding abolishing the death penalty at a confirmation hearing on the 3rd, saying, “Extremely cruel and inhumane crimes are still occurring, and the public’s feelings regarding the law and the symbolism of the death penalty as a form of retribution cannot be easily ignored.” announced its position.

In Korea, 59 people who have been sentenced to death have been imprisoned in prison for as long as 30 years. Let’s take a look at their faces once more.

May 19, 1994. A fire broke out in a two-story Western-style house located in a luxury residential area in Samseong-dong, Seoul. The couple’s charred bodies were bleeding. It was strange. Her entire body, from the nape of her neck to her legs, was full of traces of ovaries. Cruelly, there was a hole in the man’s heart.

The deceased couple in their 40s were Mr. Park and his wife, Ms. Jo, who at the time ran an herbal medicine store and had made themselves worth 10 billion won. The first report was made by the eldest son who lived in the same house.

“I woke up and opened the door to go to the bathroom, but there was a fire. I was in a hurry to get out by myself. My parents were still in the house, so please help me.”

Park Han-sang, the 23-year-old eldest son, sobbed as if he was suffering from self-blame for surviving the death of his parents. People found out only later. They were the tears of joy of a pervert who had obtained his inheritance. It was terrible acting. The person who killed his wife and his wife that night was the eldest son whom they had raised so carefully. He stabbed his father and mother regarding 40 times each and doused them with gasoline and set them on fire. And then, very calmly, I cried.

◇ Nurse’s testimony, calf wound, and confession

At first, the police suspected simple robbery and arson targeting property. However, nothing was missing, and the autopsy found no soot in the respiratory tract or lungs. This means that he was already dead before the fire started. I have never held a grudge to the point of being brutally murdered. The couple got along well with everyone around them and were devout religious people who went to church every week.

The only strange thing was Park Han-sang, the only survivor. The day before his funeral, he went to the morgue and cried to the point of fainting, and while the funeral was in progress, he called his friend and laid out his business plan. As soon as the funeral was over, he would sell his father’s business and go abroad to do business. He laughed openly while talking on the phone with his girlfriend. As if something good had happened.

I was suspicious, but I mightn’t question him openly. This is because there was sympathy for her as she lost her parents overnight. When the police attempted to interrogate witnesses, some family members publicly protested, saying, “What can you do to a child who is in mental shock following losing his parents?” It was so unimaginable that a child would kill her parents so cruelly.

The decisive testimony came from the nurse who treated Park Han-sang immediately following the incident. “I saw blood on my head and looked to see if there was a wound, but there wasn’t.” And then the wound on the calf was discovered. It was a human injury caused by being bitten by a person. As a result of comparing the teeth, it matched the teeth marks of his father, Mr. Park.

The son’s sin was revealed to the world through the blood of his parents that might not be wiped away and the evidence left behind by his dying father. Park Han-sang confessed to the crime a week following the incident and said, “I feel refreshed, I had a hard time sleeping.”

◇ My son, naked and holding a knife, stabbed me without stopping for regarding 10 minutes.

That night, Park Han-sang stood in the middle of his room naked, even taking off his underwear. He then turned over the bed sheets and grabbed a mountaineering knife in each hand. I opened the door where my parents were sleeping with such a bizarre appearance. The brutal stabbing continued for regarding 10 minutes.

“I don’t want to get my parents’ blood on me. If you wake up, I don’t want you to know it’s me. My body was half-bowed like this. Her mother was on this side, so her bed covers were missing. I think I first stabbed her in the neck area with my right hand. She just kept poking. “I don’t know if she passed away right away, and I didn’t hear her scream.”

After finishing his work, Park Han-sang went to the bathroom and turned on the shower. Hoping that all traces of the murder would be washed away along with his parents’ blood splattered on his body. Han Seong-hee, who was the detective in charge at the time, recalled, “When I sprayed luminol (a special solution that turns blood stains into fluorescent colors) in the bathroom, it created a huge sparkling glow.”

During the on-site verification, Park Han-sang’s expression was calm. When asked regarding his motive, he said, “My father’s harsh criticism of me. He replied, “I think that was the basic cause.” When I asked him once more what harsh words his father had said to him, he said, “He said, ‘You are incapable of doing anything.’” At the same time, he said, “I thought that if my father and mother were not around, I might do whatever I wanted with my property.”

◇ How did Park Han-sang, the son of a rich family, become a monster?

As their son said, were Mr. and Mrs. Park strict parents towards their children? Her expectations for her eldest son were naturally high. His father, Mr. Park, wanted his eldest son to enter oriental medicine school and take over the family business he had built. He moved home to Gangnam District 8 and is said to have asked the church pastor every day for advice on how to raise his son well.

As a ‘child from an established family’, Park Han-sang received full support from his parents from an early age. However, he had no interest in studying and failed to enter oriental medical school. Even during his time in the National Guard, he was completely unfaithful. Every evening, he drove his Sonata to Apgujeong and enjoyed the luxurious ‘orange tribe’ life.

After being discharged from the military, I went to study in the United States. He attended a language school near Los Angeles, but he didn’t do well, and stayed in his room, binging on violent videos. Then he met a foreign student his age and tried his hand at gambling. Her parents’ monthly living expenses of $2,000 were also put on the gambling table.

When he ran out of money, he secretly returned to Korea, issued a credit card, and even used it as collateral to take out private loans. He was caught by his relatives and moved back to the United States, but returned home with a large amount of debt due to repeated gambling. In the end, he heard from his father, who had been handling all accidents, that he would “dig them out of the family register.” It wasn’t because he mightn’t study, mightn’t go to oriental medicine school, or didn’t take over the oriental medicine store.

The son, who had only disappointed his parents, decided to commit murder following hearing his father’s words. Park Han-sang, who returned to Korea on May 13, 1994, purchased two hiking knives and a plastic oil can at a store near Cheonggyecheon, and then went to a gas station in Sinsa-dong and bought 8 liters of gasoline. And on the 19th he killed his parents.

◇ “I am not guilty.” The older brother showed no remorse, and the younger brother never came back once more.

The death penalty was sentenced in the first and second trials, and the Supreme Court confirmed the original verdict on August 25, 1995. However, executions in Korea stopped for the last time on December 30, 1997, and Park Han-sang’s life continues to this day.

At the time, the first trial court sentenced Park Han-sang to death and said, “(We) also tried hard to find a justification to avoid the death penalty, but we might only assume that if the defendant’s parents were alive, they would not have wanted their son to be executed.” Has Park Han-sang, now a middle-aged man of fifty-two, ever thought regarding the judge’s scolding?

There was a man who came to the prison to meet Park Han-sang. He was a two-year-old younger brother who lost his entire family and was left alone. Park Han-sang looked straight at her sister’s face and said as if she felt unfair.

“I am innocent.”

After that, the younger brother never looked for his older brother once more.

The late Yang Sun-ja, a correctional officer who had been counseling death row inmates for 30 years, was the only person to visit Park Han-sang. Park Han-sang wrote dozens of letters to Mr. Yang over the course of six years, and the words they contained were always the same. He denied the crime, complained of injustice, and blamed his parents. Ms. Yang remembered Park Han-sang like this in her book ‘Life Asks, I Answer’.

“Park Han-sang, Gangnam’s idiot. “He might no longer counsel the child and gave up.”

What will he think as he looks back on the 30 years he was fortunate to have survived? Does he take it for granted that he is alive and not executed? In the past, present, and future, he regrets the legacy passed on to his younger brother. Still resenting his father’s words.
