(CNN) The prosecutor who was said to have led the investigation into the attack on a television station in Ecuador, South America, was assassinated on the 17th in Guayaquil, in the west of the country. The announcement was made by Attorney General Diana Salazar.

According to a video posted by Mr. Salazar to Prosecutor Suarez focused on investigating organized crime.

According to CNN affiliate Equavisa, prosecutor Suarez was leading the investigation into the attack on local TV station TC Television by armed men on the 9th of this month during a live broadcast.

Ecuador’s President Daniel Novoa declared a state of emergency on the 8th following the leader of a criminal organization suspected of being involved in drug trafficking to Mexico and the United States reportedly escaped from a prison in Guayaquil. The attack on the television station occurred amidst a series of explosions, kidnappings of police officers, and prison riots.

In response to the attack on the television station, President Noboa declared an “internal armed conflict” and ordered security forces to “neutralize” multiple criminal organizations suspected of being involved in heinous crimes. Since then, military and police forces have been deployed throughout Guayaquil.

The presidential palace announced on the 17th that the national police and military have carried out 20,849 operations once morest criminal organizations and arrested 1,975 people since the 9th of this month.
