César Suárez, the Ecuadorian prosecutor who was investigating the recent armed attack on the TC Televisión channel, was murdered this past Wednesday, January 17 in Guayaquil.
All of the above, within the framework of a bloody escalation of the war that the country is experiencing with transnational criminal gangs.
As reported by the local media in Guayaquil, prosecutor Suárez was shot at by a group of hitmen while he was driving his vehicle and following leaving his office.
This is a man from the Ecuadorian city of Paján, in the province of Manabí. He was 38 years old and had two minor daughters, he was a family man who since that fateful Wednesday has been considered a martyr of organized crime.
The prosecutor graduated as a lawyer from the University of Guayaquil in 2010 and not content with that achievement, the man later studied a master’s degree in Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Procedural Law and Criminalistics.
As reported by the media Primicias, throughout his entire career he managed to obtain sentences once morest people involved in murders, femicides and cases of contract killings.
It is because of this excellent judicial career that he became known as Ecuador’s anti-mafia prosecutor.
He was also behind investigations that uncovered corruption scandals in the hospital system and carried out other investigations in judicial organizations.
Career and achievements of prosecutor César Suárez
In 2009, he arrived at the judicial entity to work as an assistant to the Guayas Prosecutor’s Office, in charge of receiving complaints, versions and dispatching files.
Just 5 years later he was appointed as prosecutor of the Jipijapa canton, also in Manabí.
From 2015 to 2018 he was a prosecutor in the People and Guarantees unit of the city of Manta. At that time, the prosecutor began to receive threats.
According to Ecuadorian media, in July 2017 a pamphlet appeared offering one million dollars for the prosecutor’s life.
The prosecutor led investigations that uncovered the infiltration of mafias in the judicial system and corruption scandals in the purchase of medical supplies during the covid-19 pandemic.
Among those convicted in 2021 for this last case was businessman Daniel Salcedo, who only served two of the 13 years to which he was sentenced and benefited from a court decision that granted him freedom.
In fact, it was a man who was also involved in the ‘Metastasis’ case, which revealed in December the links between a powerful drug trafficker with judges, prosecutors and police.
This is the largest case of corruption uncovered in the history of Ecuador.
Prosecutors have been in the crosshairs of the more than twenty criminal organizations that operate in Ecuador. In June of last year, prosecutor Leonardo Palacios was murdered in the town of Durán, neighboring Guayaquil.
Delicate investigations
The prosecutor César Suárez, who had become popular by leading investigations into hospital corruption during the pandemic, He had in his hands the investigation of the murder of two police officers.
