Muralidharan to Nathan Line: Who’s in the 500-wicket club?

Nathan Line on Sunday By dismissing Pakistani all-rounder Faheem Ashraf Became the eighth member of the club of bowlers to take 500 Test wickets.

36-year-old Nathan Line is the second off-spinner after Muralitharan to achieve this feat.

Interestingly, Nathan Lyne took up a ground staff job at Adelaide Oval after failing to break into a major team early in his career. Meanwhile, coach Darren Barry caught the eye of him, who selected Laine in the T20 team of a local team, the Redbacks.

Due to the excellent performance of the line, the Redbacks won the tournament and thus began his career.

Nathan Line has so far bowled 5269 overs in 230 innings of 123 matches in which he has taken 501 wickets. Line has taken five wickets 23 times in an innings so far, while his best bowling figure is eight wickets for 50 runs.

He averages 30.85 runs per wicket, the highest average in the 500 club. In comparison, McGrath has the lowest average on this list at 21.64.

The members of the 500 or more wickets club are four spinners and four fast bowlers. They include three bowlers from Australia, two from England, one from Sri Lanka and one from West Indies and one from India. No bowler from Pakistan is a member of this club, and from Pakistan Wasim Akram Has taken the most wickets with 414.

In this article, we take a look at the remaining seven members of the 500 club.

Muttiah Muralitharan: 800 wickets (Sri Lanka)

Muralidharan, known as the wizard of spin, is the only bowler in the world to have taken 800 wickets.

Muralitharan’s career has been controversial due to objections to his bowling action, but he has proved his action to be correct many times in Tests.

Muralitharan took 800 wickets in 133 matches, including five wickets in an innings 67 times and ten wickets in a match 22 times, which remain unbeaten till date.

Shane Warne (Australia) 708 wickets

Shane Warren is generally regarded as the greatest leg-spinner in the history of the world.

He had a strong rivalry with Muralidharan. Incidentally, Shane Warne took 500 wickets in the same series in which Muralitharan crossed the milestone.

Shane Warne took a total of 708 wickets in 145 matches, including five wickets in an innings 37 times.

The king of swing bowling, Anderson has been playing international cricket continuously for the past 20 years and his bowling has improved over time.

Anderson has taken 690 wickets in 183 matches, including 32 five-wicket hauls in one innings.

Even at the age of 41, Anderson is fit and can be expected to become the first fast bowler to take 700 wickets, a record that will be very difficult if not impossible for any other fast bowler to break.

Anil Kumble (India) 619 wickets

Anil Kumble did not spin the ball much but his biggest weapon was his line and length and control with which he troubled the top batsmen around the world.

He is the only bowler in this list to have taken ten wickets in an innings.

Anil Kumble took 619 wickets in 132 Test matches.

Stewart Broad (England) 604 wickets

With a reputation for disrupting batting lines around the world in partnership with James Anderson, Broad is adept at swinging the ball both ways, and is particularly difficult to play in England’s conditions.

Broad has taken 604 wickets in 167 matches, including 20 five-wicket hauls in an innings.

Glenn McGrath (Australia) 563 wickets

One of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of cricket, McGrath did not have much pace but his control was such that good batsmen felt helpless against him.

Courtney Walsh (West Indies) 519 wickets

The West Indies produced one formidable fast bowler after another in the 80s and 90s, but none of them achieved the success of Walsh. He is the first bowler in the history of cricket to take 500 wickets.

Walsh took five wickets in an innings 22 times.
