mural commemorating Operation Torch – mafrique

A mural commemorating the 80th anniversary of Operation Torch was inaugurated Monday in Kenitra, at the joint initiative of the embassies of Poland and the United States of America in Morocco.

This project, made possible thanks to the support of the Wilaya of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and the municipal authorities of Kenitra, commemorates the landing on November 8, 1942 of more than 30,000 American soldiers from the Western « Naval Task Force » in Safi, Mohammedia and near Kenitra.

The success of this operation, considered at the time the largest amphibious military landing, relied heavily on an intelligence network led by Polish Army Major Słowikowski, which provided the British and Americans with more than 1,200 secret reports on Morocco and Algeria, then under the control of the Vichy French government.

On this occasion, the Polish Ambassador to Morocco, Krzysztof Karwowski, indicated that this mural constitutes “A tribute to the known and unknown heroes of the Second World War to whom we owe our freedom”.

“I am particularly proud to be able to pay tribute to the great Polish hero, Major Słowikowski, whose role in the success of Operation Torch is gradually being revealed by American, British and Polish historians”he said in a statement to the press.
