Famed Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami is collaborating with Major League Baseball (MLB) to celebrate the upcoming Tokyo Series with an exclusive merchandise collection. The series marks the 25th anniversary of MLB’s first regular-season games in Japan.

The “Takashi Murakami x MLB Tokyo Series” collection, was launched March 7th, prior to the games between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs, which will take place March 18th and 19th at the Tokyo Dome.

According to Murakami, “I think this new collection builds upon the historical friendship between Japan and the United States…I feel lucky to be able to work alongside Complex, MLB and highlight shohei Ohtani, an outstanding athlete who has emerged from Japan and made a name for himself on the global stage. This is something I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be a part of.”

Collection Highlights

The collection includes a wide range of apparel and merchandise featuring Murakami’s signature flower motifs and vibrant designs:

  • apparel: nike T-shirts,hoodies,and jerseys featuring Murakami’s flower motifs are available for select stars from both teams.Dodgers jerseys include Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. Cubs jerseys feature Shota Imanaga, Seiya Suzuki, and Dansby Swanson.
  • Accessories: New Era knits and adjustable caps adorned with Murakami flowers.
  • Equipment: Rawlings baseballs and gloves, along with Victus bats, all decorated with Murakami’s designs.

Archyde: Takashi-san,it’s wonderful to have you here. Your collaboration with MLB is a unique fusion of art and sport. Can you share what inspired this creative partnership?

Takashi Murakami: Thank you for having me.I’ve always been fascinated by the cultural exchange between Japan and the United States. MLB’s 25th anniversary of playing regular-season games in Japan seemed like the perfect possibility to celebrate this friendship through art. I’m truly honored to be a part of this.

Archyde: Your signature flower motifs and vibrant designs have taken the world by storm. What made you choose these elements for this collaboration? How did you adapt them to fit the baseball theme?

takashi Murakami: My flowers have been a part of my ‘Superflat’ Universe, symbolizing both life and death. they translated beautifully onto baseball jerseys and equipment, representing the dynamic, vibrant energy of the sport.I also incorporated Mr.DOB, my cartoon alter-ego, and some customary Japanese artistry to create a unique, cohesive collection.

From the Canvas to the Field

Archyde: The collection ranges from apparel and accessories to equipment and collectibles. How did you approach designing for each category?

Takashi Murakami: every piece was a fun challenge. As a notable example, designing jerseys allowed me to play with colour and placement in ways I hadn’t before. The equipment, like Rawlings baseballs and gloves, was an opportunity to incorporate my designs into functional objects. And for collectibles,like the Topps cards,I had the chance to create unique,art-focused pieces that fans can treasures.

Celebrating Japan, Showcasing the World

Archyde: Stars from both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the chicago Cubs feature in this collection.How does the inclusion of players like Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts add to the collection’s global appeal?

Takashi Murakami: Having these global stars on the jerseys adds a-CompatibleSports//RockwellBlattg worldly dimension.Ohtani, especially, being a Japanese player who’s made it big in the US, represents the cultural exchange perfectly. It’s like welcomed into the family, and I’m excited for fans to own a piece of that.
