Schouten already announced in February that it wanted to halve the repayment period for people in a debt relief process from three to one and a half years. In doing so, she gave substance to the agreement in the coalition agreement that people with problematic debts should be helped more quickly.
In recent weeks, consultations have been held with all parties involved to arrive at a joint start date. Schouten wanted to ensure clarity and prevent municipalities from adopting their own working method.
According to Schouten, the shorter repayment period does not mean that people also receive help for a shorter period of time. “It is important to me that there is a strong focus on guidance and followingcare, with the starting point: guidance as short as possible and as long as necessary,” she writes to the House of Representatives.
Schouten does not think it is necessary now to lay down the repayment period in law. She believes that this is not in keeping with the nature of an amicable process, in which debt counselors and creditors try to work it out among themselves. There must then be room for “customisation”. This approach will be evaluated following one year.
VNG says it is pleased with the shorter repayment period, “because it gives residents a faster perspective on a sustainable debt-free future”.
