Municipalities have employed more people in nurseries and kindergartens: This has met with criticism

Since 1 January this year, there have been new requirements for minimum standards in force, but it is largely students and other unskilled workers who have become more numerous in nurseries and kindergartens. It is written by DR.

Since 2019, the number of unskilled helpers in the institutions has increased by 41 percent, while the number of pedagogues has increased by 10 percent.

This shows figures that DR has received from 81 out of 98 municipalities.

And in North Jutland, there are also more hands to take care of the little ones, but it is quite different from municipality to municipality, whether it is trained staff or unskilled.

Big differences

In Vesthimmerland, there has been an increase in the number of assistants of 198 per cent, while there have been ten per cent more pedagogues.

In Jammerbugt too, the increase among the unskilled is large at 33 per cent, while there are only three per cent more educated pedagogues today than in 2019.

The picture looks different in Thisted, where there has been a decrease of ten per cent in the number of teaching assistants, and an increase of 36 per cent more people with the education certificate in hand.

The same trend applies on Læsø. You can dive into the figures for your municipality here.

– There are more children who are unhappy

The increasing proportion of untrained staff faces criticism from both the parents’ national organization, FOLA, and from the teachers’ union, BUPL. They believe that it has become more important that there is a high degree of professionalism.

– Because today we see a higher complexity in the work: There are more children who are unhappy and have some challenges that need to be taken care of, says chairman Elisa Rimpler to DR.

Minister for Children and Education Mattias Tesfaye (S) acknowledges, according to DR, that there are challenges with the quality of care services for the youngest children.

At the same time, he points to several different initiatives by the government which will increase the number of pedagogues in the coming years.
