The far-left party renounces its right of initiative provided for by Flemish electoral rules. N-VA and Vooruit have announced exclusive negotiations.

If the N-VA and Vooruit do not present a coalition agreement to run the city of Antwerp by Monday evening, the PVDA-PTB does not intend to resume the right of initiative which theoretically belongs to him.

The communists prefer pass the torch directly to Vooruitindicated his head of list Jos D’Haese on Sunday on regional TV ATV.

Coming 2nd on October 13 in the port city, Raoul Hedebouw’s party had initially said that it could regain the right of initiative to form a majority. But now that the N-VA and Vooruit announced that they were conducting exclusive negotiationsthe PVDA-PTB believes that it would make little sense to take the political initiative again.

“We see that there is a form of pre-agreement between the N-VA and Vooruit, not only in the city.”

PVDA leader in Antwerp

“We see that there is a form of pre-agreement between the N-VA and Vooruit, not only in the city, but also at the national and provincial level,” commented Mr. D’Haese interviewed by Belga. “We are therefore not going to organize discussions which will not result in any majority. At the district level, however, we will take our right of initiative.

In the district of Borgerhout, discussions are still ongoing but the PVDA-PTB will nevertheless have to cede its right of initiative to Groen if he fails to complete a political agreement by Monday evening.

Deadlines of 14 days

The Flemish electoral code provides that the political list that comes first in local elections has a 14-day right of initiative. During this period, this list seeks to build a coalition to run the community.

If after this period no agreement has been reached, the political initiative is then given to the list that came in 2nd placewhich also has 14 days to try to build a majority, and so on.

During the local elections of October 13, the N-VA of outgoing mayor Bart De Wever came in first position in Antwerp, ahead of the PVDA-PTB, and Vooruit, third.

Antwerp nationalists and socialists, however, announced last week that they were now holding exclusive negotiations between the two of them to form a new coalition for the city, as well as the province.
